What is Decaf Coffee?
Decaf coffee is coffee that has been through a process of decaffeination to remove caffeine from the coffee. The removal of caffeine from the coffee begins before the green coffee beans have been roasted and result in removing between 90 and 95% of the caffeine. Decaf coffee is very popular with those people who wish to have a cup of coffee before going to bed at night, and also people who have underlying health issues such as hypertension or stomach irritation
There are typically 3 different methods for extracting caffeine from coffee beans.
The chemical process involves using either a type of paint stripper called dichloromethane or ethyl acetate better known for its aroma from nail varnish to eliminate the caffeine from steamed green coffee beans. This chemical method was very common in the early 20th century but today it is frowned upon because of the potential for chemical residue being left in the coffee.
The second method is known as Supercritical Fluid Extraction which involves the soaked green coffee beans having their caffeine dissolved and stripped by using pressurised CO2.
The third and today the most popular method for the decaffeination of coffee is called The Swiss Water Process. This is a gentle process using water mixed with a blend of liquid green coffee to wash the caffeine out of the coffee through charcoal filters that is much kinder on both the green coffee beans and the environment. The Swiss Water Process, which is favoured by Rio Coffee has the added benefit of leaving the coffee beans with their taste character intact.
