Espresso Coffee Beans

A Brief History of Espresso

At one point in time espresso, to a degree, was the drink for the true die-hard coffee drinker and the working class. In the last decade or so, thanks in large part to large coffee shop chains; the ultimate coffee drinkers brew has gained a more widespread acceptance.

What is Espresso?

Espresso coffee beans do not begin life as Espresso coffee beans but are in reality any darker roasted coffee beans. The beans are associated with Italian coffee and this is because espresso is a shot of high-pressure hot water pressurised through finely ground coffee in a fine metal filter. Espresso originated in Italy where the cafe owner would make a cup of regular coffee quickly, hence the name Espresso. However, the real breakthrough came with the invention of the espresso machine that we are familiar with today by Achille Gaggia in the early 20th century.

The beans characteristics are a darkly roasted coffee bean with an oily sheen from the natural coffee bean oils that have been brought to the surface by the coffee roasting process. A shot of espresso would not be complete without the crema on top. Crema is simply the Italian word for cream which is created by carbon dioxide being released under pressure from the pressurised hot water creating small bubbles which build a foam on top of the coffee. The thicker the crema the fresher the the beans are and the darker the roast of the espresso coffee beans the darker the crema will be.

Espresso Coffee Beans Origins

Espresso’s Origins can be traced back the late 1800’s in Italy. Italian inventor Angelo Moriondo patented a coffee brewing machine that made “instantaneous” coffee in 1884. In the next decade other inventors refined and perfected his device and gave birth to the espresso we know today.

As Italy became more urbanised, espresso bars sprang up and became a social gathering place. Espresso was traditionally consumed while standing, due to government price controls that applied to coffee served to those standing.

Italians living in other countries began to introduce the beverage and did tourists returning from Italy. By the 1950’s espresso shops were found throughout the world. At that time espresso was considered a “working class” beverage and served in down market establishments. The beverage also began to gain an “alternative” following within artistic communities in some of the world’s largest cities.

As the coffee culture of the 1980’s began to expand worldwide with shops like Costa and Starbucks becoming ubiquitous, espresso achieved a status as a “refined” coffee drinker’s beverage.
