The Origin Story
During the British Raj, Indian coffee was shipped to Europe in wooden sailing vessels — voyages that took up to six months. Stored in the holds, the green beans slowly absorbed the warm, moisture-laden sea air of the Indian Ocean, swelling and transforming. They arrived in Europe pale yellow, mellow, and remarkably low in acidity. Europeans loved them.
When steam ships replaced sail and the journey shortened to weeks, that transformation was lost. So Indian producers recreated the process on land — and Monsoon Malabar was born.
Today, beans from the high hills of Kerala and the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu are transported to the Malabar Coast — to the great warehouse districts of Mangalore and Calicut — where they are laid out in vast open-sided warehouses and exposed to the warm monsoon winds for several months. The beans swell, turn pale yellow, lose their acidity, and develop the unmistakable earthy, full-bodied character that has made this coffee legendary.
The Taste
Remarkably low acidity and extraordinary body. Rich earthy notes, dark chocolate, a hint of warm spice, and a long, deeply satisfying finish. Full-bodied and smooth, with none of the brightness of East African or Central American origins — bold, distinctive, and utterly memorable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the history of Monsoon Malabar?
The process dates to the British Raj, when Indian coffee was shipped to Europe in wooden sailing vessels over six months. The beans absorbed sea moisture, turning pale yellow and losing their acidity. When steam ships ended that journey, Indian producers recreated the transformation on the Malabar Coast.
Where does Monsoon Malabar come from?
Beans are sourced from the high hills of Kerala and the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu in southern India, then processed in open-sided warehouses in Mangalore and Calicut on the Malabar Coast.
What makes Monsoon Malabar unique?
The beans are exposed to monsoon winds for several months, causing them to swell, turn pale yellow, and lose their acidity — developing a distinctive earthy, full-bodied character found nowhere else in the world.
Who roasts this coffee?
Chiswells' master roaster, in small hand-roasted batches at our UK facility — never mass produced.
Is it whole bean or pre-ground?
Whole bean — grind fresh for maximum flavour and aroma.
Is it suitable for espresso?
Yes — the low acidity and full body make it an exceptional espresso bean, particularly popular in Italian-style blends.
Is Monsoon Malabar good for people who find coffee too acidic?
Absolutely — it is one of the lowest-acidity coffees in the world, ideal for sensitive stomachs or those who prefer a smoother, less sharp cup.
Can I buy in bulk?
