Where Does Vanilla Come From?
Vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron due to the extensive labour required to grow and harvest the vanilla pods. Vanilla derives its name from the Spanish word for "Little Pod". Vanilla originates from the Gulf Coast of Mexico, where the Totonac people were the first to harvest the vanilla vine pods. Until the 19th Century, Mexico was the world's chief producer of Vanilla, all because of a unique relationship between plant and insect. The vanilla orchid which was local to the Totonac people could only pollinate because of the special symbiotic relationship between the vanilla vine and the local species of small bees called Melipona. Today Madagascar now accounts for the majority of global vanilla production.
