Where Does Vanilla Come From?
Vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron due to the extensive labour required to grow and harvest the vanilla pods. Vanilla derives its name from the Spanish word for "Little Pod". Vanilla originates from the Gulf Coast of Mexico, where the Totonac people were the first to harvest the vanilla vine pods. Today Madagascar accounts for the majority of global vanilla production.
